His death is noted on 11 June 1828: 'Dugald Stewart dies'. On his visit to Scotland, Godwin writes to Mary Jane explaining
that he
spends 'twice twenty four hours' with Stewart at Stewart's home in Kinneal in April 1816. There are earlier entries for
D Stewart, but these
do not seem to be to Dugald Stewart, despite the possible connections. For example, in 1813, Godwin meets
D Stewart at Mackintosh's alongside Mme de Stael and others.
And the following year there is flurry of activity, which may or may not imply that D Stewart is in London:
3 November 1814: 'Write to D Stewart . C C from Davison , Curtis + Whitaker : Keir at tea. [writing smaller beneath
“Curtis + Whit-”:] seeks D Stewart'
4 November 1814: 'C C from Keir , D Stewart + B Montagu'
The DNB entry insists that Dugald Stewart left Scotland on only four occasions, and neither 1813 or 1814 are listed. The 1814 entries do not necessarily imply he was away from home although the 1813 meeting does strongly suggest that Stewart was in London. All three entries have been taken to refer to Dugald Stewart although the identification is tentative for these and for the entry in 1810.
In 1793, Godwin mentions that Holcroft reviews 'D. Stewart': this is taken to refer to Dugald Stewart's Outlines of a Course in Moral Philosophy (1793) or Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind, which appeared in three parts (1792, 1814, and 1827).
