Mary Gaskell was married to Daniel Gaskell, Liberal MP for Wakefield 1832-7. Mary Gaskell met Claire Clairmont in Pisa and Clairmont introduced her to Mary Shelley by letter. The Gaskells were already admirers of Godwin's philosophy and they were keen to meet him.
