Daniel Gaskell was MP for Wakefield 1832-7 and an important philanthropist, especially in matters relating to education and the free church. He was married to Mary Gaskell who met Claire Clairmont in Pisa. Clairmont introduced her to Mary Shelley by letter. The Gaskells were already admirers of Godwin's philosophy and they were keen to meet him.
