The only appearance of Raine in the diary before 1794 is in November 1792 where 'Dr Raine' (also 'Doctor Raine' and plain
'Raine')
appears in eight entries, all within the one month. Here, we have taken Raine to refer to a pysician who treated Godwin in
this period.
On 7 and 8 November the entries record simply 'Doctor Raine'
while on 9 and 10 November Godwin notes 'Doctor Raine: syringe'. On 11 and 12 November 'Dr Raine' and 'Raine' is noted and
on 15
and 26 November Godwin calls on 'Raine' alone.
The syringe,
the use of 'Dr' or Doctor' (in 5 of the 8 entries), the large number of entries over a short space of time and the type of
contact
(no others are present, there are no advs, dinners, letters or tea), all suggest
that this is a physician treating Godwin. Thus
none of these entries refer to Matthew Raine who appears later in the diary.
After 1792, none of the references to Raine are prefaced with 'Dr' or 'Doctor' (although confusingly, Matthew Raine would also have been known as Dr) and the contexts of the entries are consistent with the identification of Raine as Matthew Raine, headmaster of Charterhouse and brother of Jonathan Raine who also appears in the diary. St Clair has him as a friend of Godwin. Charterhouse is a link between them (26 September 1805 Godwin calls on 'Raine + Middleton, Charter-house'). According to the DNB, Raine was a great friend of Richard Porson, classical scholar, and the two men appear together in the 1800 entry. Moreover, among St Claire's sources is 'Notes to Pantheon written by Dr Raine' although there are no references to this in the diary.
The entry in 1794, 'Meet Raine and Johnson' is ambiguous but has been coded for Matthew Raine.
Godwin records his death and this matches the date given by the DNB.
