John Flather was Patrick Patrickson's closest college companion and family friend of the Godwins since 1808 (see Locke). In her Journal, Mary Shelley described Flather as the 'true assassin' of Patrickson' and in the same volume an editorial note identifies Flather as a sizar at St John's College Cambridge.
The identification is not certain, particularly as Patrickson and Flather appear to have no relationship in the diary (althogh this makes sense given Mary Shelley's comments). However, Flather calls on Godwin on the 9 Aug 1814, the day after Patrickson dines with Godwin and the day before he kills himself, suggesting some relationship.
This table lists the people this person is most frequently noted with in the diary.
