Count Gédéon Gaspard Alfred de Grimaud D'Orsay was a soldier who resigned his commision to go travelling with Marguerite Gardiner, Lady Blesington and her husband. He painted the last portrait of Lord Byron in Genoa, 1823. After Lord Blesington's death, and D'Orsay's marriage to Lady Blessington's step daughtehe returned to London. His wife left him becoming estranged from her step-mother, and D'Orsay and Lady Blessington hosted a salon, which, although disreputable, attracted many of the leading artistic and literary figures of the day such as Disraeli, Dickens, and Thackeray. It was there that Godwin met him.
