All the Cruikshanks mentioned in Godwin's diary have been coded, and the two generations have been convincingly divided. However, we were unable to identify with complete confidence the mentions of Cruikshank which could either be George or (Isaac) Robert, who are the two sons of Isaac sr.
The majority of the entries are more likely to be George: both appearances are at the soriees hosted by the painter John Martin, a friend of Godwin's, and furthermore George is more prominent than his brother in the metropolitan art world around this date (for example, the DNB shows that Robert's achievments are 'scanty' after 1830, and the two appearances are in 1834 and 1835.
There is also evidence indicating John Martin's friendship with George Cruikshank , for example the 1836 dinner mentioned in John Martin. In 1838 Martin, as Secretary of the Artists Benevolence Fund, invited George Cruickshank to serve as a steward at a Fund dinner (which he did, alongside Dickens). This evidence of Martin's relationship with George Cruikshank give us further grounds for identifying him in the diary.
Finally, in the DNB entry for the artist William Mulready, George Cruikshank is also mentioned in conjunction with Godwin's Juvenile Library and children's bookshop.
