  • Name: Mulready, William

  • Death Date: 7  July  1863
  • Occupation: artist

An Irish emigré, Mulready was sponsored by Thomas Banks to be taught at the Royal Academy Schools in 1800 aged 14. He was the primary illustrator for Godwin's Juvenile Library, claiming to have executed 307 designs in two years at 7s. 6d. each (DNB). He was a frequent visitor to Godwin’s home, along with John Linnell and George Dawe.

In 1808, there’s an entry for ‘Linnel, 1st lesson’, and a letter from Charles Clairmont to Godwin indicates that Mulready and Linnell were sketching together on a trip with Charles to Hampstead Heath (Charles Kegan Paul, William Godwin: His Friends and Contemporaries, II, p. 168).

The Looking Glass: a True History of the Early Years of an Artist (1805), written by Godwin and published by the Juvenile Library, was based upon conversations between Godwin and Mulready (DNB). According to the DNB, some of Mulready’s designs were engraved by William Blake, and Mulready worked alongside George Cruikshank (1792–1878), who also worked in Godwin's children's bookshop.
