MJ (sir Thos More and c.)' , which refers to the auctioneer James Christie (1773-1831), or at least to his premises. An advert in the Morning Chronicle the previous day advertises a sale of pictures assembled in the c17 by William Lenthal (d. 1662), speaker of the Long Parliament, including 'the very celebrated Chef d'ouvre of Holbein, the Chancellor, Sir Thomas Moor and his family'. The sale was on Saturday 21st and the pictures 'may be viewed five days preceding the sale, and Catalogues had'.
