  • Name: Christie, Thomas
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: October  1761
  • Death Date: October  1796
  • Occupation: political writer

Thomas Christie (1761-96), political writer (and merchant) who married Rebecca Thomson in 1792, who was good friends with Wollstonecraft. The early refs, 1795-6 are attributed to Christie due to the context of King, Newton, and Wollstonecraft/Imlay. Godwin also read a text by him at this time possibly his contribution to the Revolution Controversy, Letters on the Revolution in France and the New Constitution. There is also a Mrs Christie who appears 17 times, 1796-1802 and several times in conjunction with Wollstonecraft.

The final reference in Feb 1821 'Duel, John Scott and Christie' and refers to Jonathan Henry Christie, London agent for Blackwood's editor Lockhart. See also the 'Public Events' file.

The penultimate ref, 20.5.1808, 'Christie's, w. MJ (sir Thos More and c.)' refers to the auctioneer James Christie (1773-1831), or at least to his premises. An advert in the Morning Chronicle the previous day advertises a sale of pictures assembled in the c17 by William Lenthal (d. 1662), speaker of the Long Parliament, including 'the very celebrated Chef d'ouvre of Holbein, the Chancellor, Sir Thomas Moor and his family'. The sale was on Saturday 21st and the pictures 'may be viewed five days preceding the sale, and Catalogues had'.

This leaves fifteen intervening Christies, from 1799 to 1803 (not including Mrs Christies). Of these, 11 are E Christie, 2 plain Christie, one Mr Christie and one R Christie. All remain uncoded.
