The only other candidate for the entries to Chalmers from 1793-1815 is George Chalmers, who is a Tory political writer and unlikely to be Godwin's regular acquaintance. By contrast, the 31 entries can be linked to Alexander Chalmers by their strong book trade context. He enters the diary through George Robinson, often appearing at his dinners; he is also present at Joseph Johnson's and, perhaps most convincing, is 16.3.1799: 'dine at Perry's , w. Opies, Hts, S Cole, Villeneuves and Chalmers.' According to Alexander Chalmers's DNB entry, James Perry helped him in the early stages of his journalistic career. Curiously, however, Gowin's last two entries - in 1829 and 1834 are to Alex. Chalmers.

Godwin also records reading 'Chalmers on Shakespeare' in 1797 - Alexander Chalmers produced an edition of Shakespeare in 1805 which included some plates by Fuseli who is also inked to some of the meetings.

Godwin recorded his death.
