Isabel Booth was the wife of writer David Booth and the daughter of William Baxter. Mary Shelley went to live with Baxter's family and became good friends with Isabel.
Booth had been married to Isabel's sister and had married Isabel after her death. Locke (291) points to this being 'in defiance of both his church and the law.' Booth prevented any contact betwen Isabel and Mary and Shelley, even after the Shelley's marriage. Locke describes him as 'by all accounts a husband bad-tempered to the point of cruelty.'
