Ballantyne worked for his brother, James, in his Edinburgh publishing house from 1805. He also wrote a novel and contributed ballads to the Edinburgh Annual Register. He first called on Godwin with John Stoddart, recently returned from his tour of Scotland.
It is thought that references to 'Ballantine' originally refer to James and then to John. Godwin's initial contact is with James but in 1816 it seems more than probable from the entry for 21 April that the primary relationship by then is with John.
