Ballantyne was a prominent Scottish printer who is best known for printing much of Sir Walter Scott's work. In 1796 he travelled to London to make business contacts and here he met Godwin, dining at Holcroft's. A letter from Ballantyne to Godwin dated 14 November 1799 confirms the identification. Ballantyne wrote the letter to introduce Dr Bell, a physician about to sail to the West Indies. Bell called on Godwin 13 December 1799.
It is thought that references to 'Ballantine' originally refer to James and then to John. Godwin's initial contact is with James but in 1816 it seems more than probable from the entry for 21 April that the primary relationship by then is with John.
