William Adam was elected to parliament in 1774. He subsequently fought a duel with Charles James Fox in 1779 which formed the basis of a firm friendship. He was much involved in the management of the Whig party in the 1790s despite losing his seat in 1794. After building a successful legal practice, he returned to parliament in 1806.
Godwin met him once at Lauderdale's in 1796, a meeting noted in his 1796 list.
