Charles James Fox was a leading Whig in the 1780s and 1790s and a supporter of reform.
Most of the occurrences of Fox in the diary are associated with public events, but Godwin does meet Fox (in 1796 according to the 1796 list which implies that this was their first 'proper' meeting) and he seems also to have written to him and to have called on him at St Anne's Hill. Entries prior to 1796 are mostly in relation to public events, but there is also one which reads 'Dine with the Anti-tests: Fox...' on 13 February 1790. There are no grounds for doubt about the identification of these entries, but what is less clear is how intimate they were - public dinners of this nature could involve several hundred people. The entry in 1816 after Fox's death refers to the erection of a statue of Fox in Bloomsbury Square.
