It can be distinguished from other fragments on religion in the Abinger papers by Godwin's dating of the manuscript, 7 May 1818. Godwin asserts that his 'conversion from Christianity was one of the soberest, most impartial and conscientious changes of opinion that has ever occurred in the history of a human mind'.
