Author, Unknown unknown The entry reads only 'theatre', but it seems highly likely that Godwin went
to see
Macbeth on the opening night of the re-built Covent
Garden, which had been destroyed by fire the previous year. Kemble's attempt
to raise the price of tickets provoked the Old Price riots, lasting three
months. While the riots severely disrupted performances, Godwin continued to
visit the theatre during this period. See 'Covent Garden Theatre opens', 18
September 1809.
