Colman, George Arthur Griffenhoof (the younger) The Iron Chest
(
1796) This is an adaptation of William Godwin's novel,
Caleb
Williams . With music by Stephen Storace. When Colman published
The Iron Chest , he attacked Kemble for sabotaging the
play but, as it turns out, he was genuinely ill and the audience excused him
as did reviewers who were critical of the play itself. For an account of
this, see also
The Oracle (14 March 1796);
The
Star (14 March 1796); and
The Morning Herald (21
March 1796). On 13 March 1796 Godwin records having tea at Kemble's with
Twiss and discussing 'theatrical illusion'.
