On 14 January 1796 Godwin writes to Stodart (Stoddart), having just met him, to declare his conviction that there had been a 'meeting of minds' between them, and expressing the hope that they would meet again soon. There is frequent contact between 1796 and 1798, with some diminution in 1799 and thereafter and a complete break from 1803 to 1807 when Stoddart was out of the country in his role as the king's and Admiralty advocate in Malta.
St Clair has Stoddart as ‘One of Godwin’s most eager disciples’ (noting, this was reported in the letter from Marshall to Hazlitt, 21 July 1821, quoted in W Clark Durant’s edition of Memoirs of Mary Wollstonecraft).
Marshall notes that after a quarrel
with Mary Jane, Godwin went on a
‘holiday immediately to clear his
mind’ where he saw his ‘former disciple
Stoddart in Ryde’. Marshall cites a letter
from Godwin to Mary Jane from C. Kegan Paul, and
the corresponding diary entry from 1 September 1811 reads thus:
'Packet to Ryde: Hotel:
call on Stodart and capt. Burney n :
walk, w. S., to mr Simeon and cap. Hut :
sleep.'
Stodart g s: 1798 has not been coded
