  • Name: Webb, Willis
  • Gender: Male

Willis Webb was a pupil of Godwin's. He 'continued to call on his teacher for many years thereafter, to continue their discussions of morality, self-love and the rest' (Locke).

Willis appears in 1788, Willis Webb in 1789 and then it's W Webb. These all seem likely to refer to Willis Webb. We have made the assumption that the entries around 1798-1801 and thereafter are not Willis Webb. It would be unusual for Godwin to be referring to someone from outside family by their first name . There is an A Willis in 1800, several Cha. Willis between 1797 and 1801, in 1800 he refers to an H Willis and there are also plain Willis entries at the same time. There are also a series of entries to Willis between 1830 and 1835, and two in 1835 to Willis, poet. This suggests that only the very first entry for Willis in 1788 should be taken as referring to Willis Webb.

There is also the problem of whether Willis Webb is ever denoted by or included in Webb or Webb's - see entry for Webb. We have currently assumed these are Willis Webb's family but that he is not present.

Webb's ather was MP for Taunton (1768-75) and Ilchester (1775-80). He aparently never spoke in the House. He died in Bath in 1786. Willis was admitted to St John's Colege, Cambridge in 1788, graduating in 1792, and he was called to the bar in 1795. He died in Hambledown, Kent.
