1800

12  March  1800

  • Name: Walker, Adam
  • Gender: Male
  • Death Date: 11  February  1821
  • Occupation: itinerant lecturer
  • Occupation: writer

One entry has thus far been coded: 12.3.1800: 'Opie's , w. sir Robt Barclay, Hoare and Walker Eidouranion.' This can be confirmed as Adam Walker (1730-1821) - from his DNB, 'One of the most spectacular exhibits was his eidouranion, a transparent orrery, which stood the Walker family in good stead for fifty years.'

See the entry for Alexander Walker, who appears very frequently in 1800-1801, and then again in 1824. Adam Waker is coded as only appearing once. While both Adam and Alexander first appear in the course of 1800, Alexander pre-dates Walker Eidouranion (Jan to March), and subsequent A Walkers are more likely to refer to Alexander than Adam. There is at least one more, possibly multiple, uncoded 'Walker' entries, the original Walker in the diary who appears earliest and is noted without initial. He is denoted by the following entries: 46 -- walker 1790-03-15 1792-05-02 1792-05-05 1794-05-25 1794-06-01 1794-06-15 1794-10-04 1794-11-01 1794-11-23 1794-12-20 1795-01-17 1795-01-31 1795-02-02 1795-02-07 1795-02-14 1795-03-12 1795-05-03 1795-05-24 1795-06-12 1798-05-27 1798-07-29 1800-02-10 1800-06-28 1801-01-15 1801-01-21 1801-05-09 1801-05-20 1801-05-22 1801-06-02 1801-06-14 1801-06-15 1801-06-18 1801-06-28 1802-08-31 1802-11-08 1809-09-23 1809-11-17 1811-12-03 1811-12-18 1816-04-23 1817-11-29 1817-12-01 1829-07-15 1830-02-13 1830-04-18 1830-06-28 1 -- walkers 1799-12-24 This Walker is distinct from Adam and Alexander, and from Thomas (WAL05), who is always noted with initial, save for the date of his trial, and was in London too infrequently to figure this prominently in the diary. Possible candidates include John Walker (1759-1830), vaccinator and writer, who spent time in Paris in 1797: 'In Paris he was acquainted with Thomas Paine, Thomas Muir, and James Napper Tandy, and translated the manifesto of the Theophilanthropists, an atheistic society. He embraced a number of radical causes that included opposition to slavery, to the employment of children as chimney sweeps, and to cruelty to animals.' (DNB) However, John was out of England 1800-02 and there are many contacts in that period. Also, notes a Walker five days after John's death. This Walker remains unidentified. Some of the entries in 1800-01 might refer to Alexander Walker, given that this peak in entries corresponds to his entry in the diary, but we have assumed not. There are also a number of entries which may be to different Walkers, or to those noted above 1 -- walker, 44 1812-06-17 1 -- walker, finsbury square 1820-08-09 1 -- walker, kensington 1813-07-14 4 -- walker, s b 1826-01-30 1826-02-02 1826-02-07 1826-02-12
