See St Clair pp. 449-50, Wake had appealed to Godwin before for money before being imprisoned for debt
First appears 1798 at tea at Losh's, 5.11.1802 there is 'Dine at rev. Wake's, Portland Street; adv. Careless.' Write to on 24.3.1803. In the same year, reads Wake in the British Museum. 21.7.1804 'dine at Wake's , w. Carles's' 27.11.1804 'sup at Wake's w. la. Harrington and M J.' 27.1.1805 'call on Wake ; adv. mrs Carles and la. Harrington.' 18.3.1805 'Call on T C Rickman n and Wake ; adv. La. Harrington:' 24.3.1805 'sup at Wake’s , w. M J and la. Harrington.' 16.5.1805 'tea Wake’s , w. Turners, sir Ed. Harrington, mrs Thynne, miss Morgan, miss Coutts and Thomson:' On four occasions between 1803 and 1805 Godwin sees Mrs Wake separately. The evidence is restricted to St Clair's comment above, the links to Careless and Harrington, plus the fact suggestion that he might be an author Godwin reads in the British Museum and the possibility that one or all of the refs are to a reverend. Contacts range from 1798-1828, with peaks in 1802-5 and then (a smaller peak) in 1819-21. There is a Rev Wake linked to Richard Carlile, mentioned in a report of a blasphemy trial on 8 July 1822, but there is nothing in Godwin's contacts to connect him to both Wake and Carlile. Moreover, there are plenty of rev Wake's in the papers between 1800 and 1828, the curate of Upper Wallop being especially prominent.
