Richard Twiss (1747–1821), spent much time abroad and produced travel literature on Spain, Portugal and Ireland as well as an account of his stay in Paris in August 1792 as a spectator to the tumultuous political events. He also wrote on chess. In his later years, he embarked enthusiastically on a project to produce paper from recycling old books, manuscripts and straw. The venture was unsuccessful and left him in severe financial difficulty.

Richard was the elder brother of Francis Twiss and friend and correspondent to Francis Douce.

Those entries specifically identified as R Twiss have been coded for Richard. A separate entry is coded for Francis Twiss. There are many other Twiss entries, but these seem to be contacts with F Twiss.

Godwin records R Twiss's death.

It is possible that some Twiss entries are for R Twiss rather than F Twiss. Godwin enters 'R Twiss' under 1796 in the 1796 lists, which seems to make sense as 'R Twiss' enters the diary in 1796, plain 'Twiss', who we are taking to be Francis Twiss, having appeared from 1794. However, he then crosses out the 'R'! It is unclear why he does this and we have retained the coding identified above. It does, however, make differentiation between the brothers more tentative.
