DNB: Tweddell studied at Cambridge from 1786 and was a bright and prizewinning student. He was elected fellow at Trinity College in 1792 and later joined chambers in London with ambitions to eventually enter politics. He had connections to reformist circles and was an early supporter of the French Revolution (although he later denounced it). He expressed very public support for Thomas Hardy and John Horne Tooke following their acquittals in the treason trials of 1794. Tweddell saw much of Godwin between 1793 and 1795 and praised his Political Justice . He was present at the meeting between Godwin and William Wordsworth on 27 February 1795 though shortly after, he embarked on an extensive tour of Europe and the East and did not return to Britain. He died from a fever in Athens in 1799. It is possible that the Tweddell junr entries in 1795, 1796 and 1797 are John's younger brother Robert, and that the Tweddel entry in 1806 is also Robert., but these entries remain uncoded.
