William Godwin's Diary

Topping,

  • Name: Topping,
  • Gender: Unknown
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:

Family of French emigres who were friends of Mary Jane and the family . Mary Jane went to stay with them in Baker Street for several months in 1811 when she left Godwin (see St Clair).

Mrs Topping features largely in the entries, especially before 1811/12 after which Godwin begins to see more of E Topping. However, E Topping does not seem to be the husband of Mrs Topping. We are assuming that Godwin refers to the husband as Topping. Because of this proximity we have coded entries where Godwin has a meal at 'Topping's' as indicating a plural, signfying both Mr and Mrs Topping. There are occasional entries for S Toppings, and for Miss Toppings. We have left these uncoded. 'Mes Topping' we assume includes Mrs Toppings and an unknown female other(s).

St Clair suggests that Weale (who often appears with Madame Topping at family events 1811- 1813) was possibly a member of the de Vial family who anglicized his name (see p. 250) .
