  • Name: Theobald,
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:
  • Occupation: bill brokers

The first entry is 'Call on Theobald, Bill-brokers , Thompson and Carlisle:' and as nearly all the contacts are plain calls the identification as a bill-broker fits. The exceptions are 8.12.1816 'meet Theobalds.' 28.8.1820 'Theobald and Monro sign:' 4.5.1835 'Exhibition; adv. Jerdan, Joseph, G Jones, Uwins, Theobald, Leigh;' this last being so much later to cast some doubt on it being the same person. The identification as bill-broker is confirmed by the following letter, to Mrs Godwin (in Ramsgate), 18 May 1811, printed in Kegan Paul: ". . . . The post of to-day brought me £100 upon the house of Baring. It comes from the great American manager, with directions for me to furnish books, according to certain rules be lays down, at the rate of £100 per annum--this £100 being the earnest for the first year. His letter is a very kind one: I daresay he takes this step with a view to serve me in a certain degree: at any rate never did windfall come more opportunely. I need not tell you that Theobald or anybody will discount a bill, when accepted, on the house of Baring. . . . .' See Charles Kegan Paul, William Godwin: His Friends and Contemporaries (London: H.S. King, 1876)
