Tatham was born in England but moved to America in 1769. He fought on the American side in the War of Independence and subsequently was elected to the legislature of North Carolina. He visited Spain in 1795 but was asked to leave the country for reasons that are not clear. He then came to England where he remained for an undetermined period. It is known that he did return to America as he died there in a graphic fashion, standing in front of a cannon being fired to mark Washington's birthday. There was some debate over whether this was intentional or not.
