Smith studied engraving with John Keyse Sherwin and subsequently developed an interested in antiquarianism. He published his drawings in Antiquities of London (1791–1800) and Ancient Topography of London (1810–15). He became keeper of prints and drawings at the British Museum in 1816.

Identification not certain; however, one of the meetings was an adv at artist James Northcote's. He was also associated with the Society for Antiquaries; Godwin knew many of this group's members..
