Charlotte Smith was an acclaimed poet and novelist. She published Elegiac Sonnets in 1784, a collection which won her the admiration of Coleridge and which reached a ninth edition by 1800. Her novels include Desmond (1792) and The Old Manor House (1793). She wrote the prologue to Godwin' s Antonio.
Thanks to her letters in the Abinger collection we can be confident that Godwin is referring to her when he writes C Smith in the diary prior to her death in October 1806. He meets 'C Smith' with a number of people who can be linked to Charlotte, including blood and marital relations. References to C Smith and Mrs C or Cl Smith after her death may be attributed to an unidentified Cecil Smith and wife. Miss C/Cha Smith refers to her daughter, Charlotte Mary, who was her mother's amanuensis.
Godwin recorded her death.
