There is some confusion as to identity,
since the fifth daughter of George III is referred to in the press
as Lady Sophia Sidney, both in respect to her portrait and
news of her activities. At the same time, there is repeated
reference to Sir Philip and Lady Sophia Sidney, who also
appear extensively in fashionable royal circles, and who are more likely to be
linked to Godwin. This seems to refer to Lady Sophia FitzClarence who was the illegitimate
daughter of William IV Hanover, King of the United Kingdom,
and Dorothea Bland. She married Philip Charles Sidney,
1st Baron De L'Isle and Dudley of Penshurst, son of Sir John
Shelley Sydney, 1st Bt. and Henrietta Hunloke, on 13 August
1825 at London, England. She died on 10 April 1837 at age 40.
From 13 August 1825, her married name became Sidney.
On 24 May 1831 she was granted the rank of a marquess' daughter.
Godwin seems to try to see her a good deal in 1834.
