William Godwin's Diary

Shield, William

  • Name: Shield, William
  • Gender: Male
  • Death Date: 25  January  1829
  • Occupation: composer

He first appears in the diary on 29 June 1788, where the presence of fellow composer Clementi confirms the identification as William Shield, composer, (1748/9-1829). (Clementi and Shield would eventually be buried in the same grave in Westminster Abbey). There is another meeting with Clementi and a reference to the Bedford theatre in 1788. In 1791, Godwin, Shield and Clementi all dine at Holcroft's. Holcroft and Shield's friendship was of long-standing, having both been in travelling player companies in the North of England.
On the correct date, 25 January 1829, Godwin records Sheild's death.
