Elder brother of Lady Oxford (née Jane Scott, 1772-1824, married Edward Harley, 5th Earl of Oxford, in 1794), mother of one of Sir Francis Burdett's illegitimate children, also brother of Hobbes Scott. Burdett took out a law suit against William Scott in 1811 for the recovery of a loan of £5,000. There are a number of meetings at Horne Tooke's where the identification seems clear. However, there are two W Scott entries in 1805 when Godwin calls on W Scott, on both occasions finding him absent. The lack of circumstantial support makes these identifications tentative.
