John Scott was called to the bar in 1776 and elected MP for Woebly in 1986. He later held the posts of solicitor-general, lord cheif justice and lord chancellor. As solicitor general he was active in the repression of political dissent especially in the form of support for the French revolution. He was a key figure in bringing the charges of high treason against activists including John Horne Tooke and Thomas Hardy. He led the prosecution in Hardy's trial.
There is a clear reference in 1788 to John Scott's appointment as solicitor-general. However, it is highly unlikley that subsequent Scott's - beginning A.Scott in 1793, then becoming Scott, are a reference to the judge, so they have been treated separately.
