According both to Locke and to St Clair, Rowan had been on friendly terms with Wollstonecraft in Paris. See also, from the Abinger papers, the letter from Wollstonecraft to Rowan (12 September 1796) and from Rowan to Wollstonecraft (15 September 1797). Godwin first mentions him 24 March 1793: 'Dine at H. Tooke’s , with Zenobio, Sempil, Gawler, Knight, Harwood, Hamilton Rowan, Thelwal{,} Sharpe and Dyson'. In Gentleman Radical, Bewley notes: '[At Horne Tooke's] Godwin also encountered Archibald Hamilton Rowan, a huge, vain, flamboyant Anglo-Irish landowner who had joined the United Irishmen and was making a great noise in Dublin over their campaign for electoral reform'. (p. 120) Rowan is in prison or exile from 1794 until 1803.
Later entries, which have been abbreviated to H Rowan then simply Rowan, refer to the same person. For example 'write to Rowan' on 21 May 1827 matches the letter in the Abinger papers, which is addressed to A H Rowan, Esq.
A note from Rowan to Godwin of 27 September 1803 talks of poor Emmet. There is a long letter to Godwin (currently attributed to Blackwood but from Rowan), written 5 November 1806, describing settling back in Ireland in 1806, when he was permitted to return to ireland after his father's death.
Godwin records his death.

On 6 October 1781 Archibald Hamilton Rowan married Sarah Anne Dawson (c.1764–1834) in Paris. Rowan was in prison or exile from 1794-1803. The couple then see Godwin frequently, with there being an independent relationship with Mrs Hamilton, who often appears in company with Mary Jane. The couple had ten children.
Rowan's, Rowans, and Rowan and a number of other Rowans have all been taken to indicate Mrs Rowan's presence. We canot be sure of this but the pattern seems consistent and the calls often involve Mary Jane, who seems to have seen a lot of Mrs Rowan. There are also a number of calls on Mrs Rowan alone by Godwin and Mary Jane.
