There is also a Thomas Rodd Junior (1796-1849) who took over the business in 1821 but would have worked there before this date and Horatio Rodd, the younger son, and brother to Thomas the younger, who set up his own booksellers and printing business. When he went bankrupt he rejoined his brother in the family business. The references to Horatio Rodd and spouse are to Matilda Brown whom he married on 18 February 1822. Their son Walter worked for his uncle Thomas as a cataloguer. Much more problematic is untangling Thomas Rodd the elder (d. 27.11.1822) and Thomas Rodd the younger (1796-1849). On 23.12.1820 Godwin notes 'Rodd, senr and junr' and according to the DNB Thomas Rodd jr took over when his father retired in 1821, although he assisted in the shop before this date. Godwin sometimes uses the initial T, both before and after 1821, so this is not helpful. It is difficult to see how to judge when T Rodd shifts from designating the father to designating the son. Because of Thomas the elder's retirement in 1821 we have coded entries to T Rodd thereafter for the son, rather than the father, from the start of 1821, the year the son takes over the running of the bookshop. Rodd sr dies at the end of 1822. It seems from the entries that Godwin's main dealings with Rodd were in his role as bookseller, not as a personal friend (eg. often listed in calls alongside other people in the book trade). Therefore, when the son takes over the running of the bookshop Rodd jr is likely to have become Godwin's primary contact. There are also a number of plain 'Rodd' entries, with these being ambiguous between the brothers. We have presumes that these refer to Thomas unless they follow a long list of references to H Rodd. But this is clearly a matter of judgment and it is quite possible that Godwinsees more of Horatio than the diary clearly shows. Again, however, if 'Rodd' really stands for the shop, this difference might be of little moment.
