27  June  1788

  • Name: Raikes, Thomas
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 1736
  • Death Date: 1811
  • Occupation: merchant; governor of the Bank of England

It seems likely that George Dyson was apprenticed to Thomas Raikes (father of the dandy and diarist Thomas Raikes (DNB) who introduced him and his brother Abraham to Godwin. The origin of Raikes's connection with Godwin is unclear. Thomas Raikes was a merchant; his brother Robert Raikes, (1736–1811), was a promoter of Sunday schools. Raikes appears only once in the diary on 27 June 1788 at dinner at Robinson's.
