  • Name: Paull, James
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 1770
  • Death Date: 15  April  1808

Godwin records his death and there are 11 entries in total (all spelt Paul), that begin in 1806 and are for the most part associated with Curran - and with Horne Tooke.

Paull stood as a radical candidate for Westminster in 1806 against Sheridan and Sir Samuel Hood; and did so with the support of Tooke and Burdett., as well as Cartwright and Cobbett, only to be narrowly defeated (receiving only 277 votes fewer than Sheridan). Paull contested Sheridan's election and petitioned Parliament. Before the case was heard, Parliament was dissolved early the following year and Paull sought to contest the seat again, but was rejected by the Westminster electors as a pair with Burdett (with whom Paull fought a duel over allegations that Paull had misrepresented Burdett's willingness to stand). Paull vascillated about whether to stand but eventually withdrew with his political career ruined. There was an accompanying spate of pamphleteering involved Paull and Tooke, which Godwin clearly read at the time.
