Godwin and Parr's relationship is well-documented in the biographies. One issue is whether (and when) 'S P' refers to Parr. The first time it is used, 28.6.1795 'Walk w. S P' it comes the day after he has seen Parr, making it more likely, and there are also several entries where 'S P' appears in conjunction with Mackintosh with whom Parr was friends (see Parr's DNB entry, also Locke, p. 163). The abbreviation is used again, from 1809 (by which point Parr has all but disappeared from the diary), it seems more likely to be S Pilcher. S Parr is, however, sometimes used on the same occasion as Parr, suggesting that this is a reference to Sarah Parr, Parr's daughter who elopes with a young man (Wynne) when Godwin is visiting in 1797, and about whom Godwin and Wollstonecraft exchange views in their correspondence. St Clair also cites various pieces of clandestine and flirtatious correspondence from Sarah to Godwin, the coinciding dates of which strongly suggests that SP is Sarah in 1795 and 1796. Godwin also has entries for Caroline Parr, Parr's youngest daughter. In keeping with contemporary practice, we have presumed that Miss Parr refers to the elder daughter.
