Godwin meets Frederick Norman , one of his parishioners in Stowmarket, in 1781 and Norman introduces him to the work of Holbach and Helvetius. Norman seems to make only one trip to London, recorded in the diary. Otherwise Godwin sees him when he is visiting the Stowmarket area.

Godwin records 'walk to Norman's manufactory' in 1803 and www.stowmarket-history.co.uk identifies Frederick Norman as 'engaged in the manufacture of linen, hemp and twine in the town'.

There is a letter, MS. Abinger c. 1, fols. 6-7: 12 Jan. 1783, from Norman to Godwin about books and about Burke and Fox whose conduct he reprobates as evidence of 'disappointed ambition.' In the diary, Godwin talks to him of 'God, industry, drinking and swearing' and 'duties, revolutions and a God'.
