It seems likely that Godwin met Newton at an Exhibition at the British Galery with Landseer in 1824, and that he called on him some time later in the following year. The reference to 'Newton, painter' seems clear. But, given that A F Newton was not a presence in the Diary at this point, and A or Augustus Newton (unidentified), is consistently indicated with name or initial, it is possible that other entries to 'Newton' are to this Newton.
