Godwin visits Munnings in the New Jail on 5 April 1793 and sees ‘Munnings’s creditor’ the following day (which suggests that Munnings is in jail for debt). He visits him on 18 April and writes to S Munnings on 23 April (whom we assume not to be identical to Munnings but a relative, and as such not coded, to whom Godwin is writing to seek help). He calls again on Munnings on 26 April and on 1 and 9 May (the first being identified as Adams Court, suggesting that he had been able to secure his release from debtors prison). There are later entries for Mrs Munnings (in 1803 and 1805) and one for L Munnings in 1831. There is a letter from Godwin to Joseph Fawcett (c.1782-5) that refers to a meeting he is due to have with Leon Munnings Esq., who has also expressed a wish to see Fawcett. In her edition of the letters, Pamela Clemit notes that Godwin mentions meeting Mrs Alice Munnings 'and her unfortunate son, Leonard, an agreeable, lively, well-bred and intelligent man', whom she takes to be the person imprisoned for debt in 1793.

Godwin notes his death on 11 May and this is the only occasion when he spells the name without an 's' at the end, but it is followed by 'Munnings's funeral!' to underline Godwin's inconsistency!
