Charles André Mercier is the brother of Louis Sebastian Mercier. Holcroft met Charles André , when Mercier was running a hotel in Paris in 1783. Charles André settled in England between 1795 and 1799, and his famiy seem to have remained in England until his return in 1802. Charles André's daughter Louisa Mercier-Holcroftbecame Holcroft's fourth wife. Entries to Mercier are coded for Charles André rather than for his brother, except in 1791, when we know that Charles André comes in October, but not in May. The May entries (coupled with the rather unuaul prominence of the first entry 'Mercier arrives') suggests that these entries refeer to L S Mercier). Otherwise Mercier is assumed to refer to Charles André, until his death in 1823. There is evidence that although Mercier resided in Anspach from 1787 until 1790 he also spent some time in London and Paris, so we are asuming that that the references to Mercier in 1788 are to Charles André. The literature suggests that Charles André had at least three children, Charles, Louisa and another daughter who married Charles-Michel Le Cronier and who settled in London. The other entries in the diary are to Charlotte, Charles, C, T and E (1799), C and B (1803), B (1806), E (1809, 1812), and Ad. Mercier (1814). We have coded the Charles and C entries as Mercier's son Charles. At least one other may be Mercier's wife, and another may be the second daughter.
