A General in the Naploeonic Army who married Hocroft's daughter by his second marriage Sophie Cole (nee Holcroft). He was created a Baron in 1809. The couple lived abroad for much of the time. Mergez, who was Danton's cousin, was in London in 1792-3 with Recordain (possibly recorded at Recordat by Godwin - see Hampson p. 79), another relation of Danton's. He appears as Merget in Godwin's diary in these earlier years.
