Godwin only mentions him once, at Jardine's in the company of Holcroft, Lugo and Restiff. It is possible that this refers to Daniel Mendoza (1764-1836), a boxer, actor and publican (See DNB). However, in October 1792, the newspapers reported the presentation at court by the Spanish Ambassador in London Captains Mendoza and Lugo. The slight complication is that Restiff seems to refer to the French writer, Restif le Bretonne, who is not natural company for Spanish officers!
