See DNB.

Godwin first meets him (as W Lamb) at his country house, Brocket, still in the company of Lady Caroline Lamb, from whom Lamb finally broke in 1825. He meets them together in 1823; he writes to Lamb in 1826; and calls on him and writes to him on several occasions in 1828. Godwin refers in 1828 to the death of Melbourne's father, and subsequent references are to Melbourne rather than W Lamb. Thereafter it is clear that Godwin is communicating with Melbourne with repect to the prospect and retention of his office.
