James Manning was the son of a Unitarian minister, also James Manning, from Exeter. He had an interest in antiquaries and languages. He assisted in the defence of Queen Caroline and was made serjeant-at-law in 1840.
Rev Manning in 1811 and Manning (exeter) 1818 are probably references to his father, also James Manning a Unitarian minister from Exeter.
