Malkin was the first professor of history at the University of London, appointed in 1829. He also commissioned Wiliam Blake to design and engrave the frontispiece of his book, A Father's Memoir of his Child. The introduction to the book includes a valuable acount of Blake's early life. Malkin knew Godwin mainly through John Horne Tooke.
