There was a printing firm with the name McGowan, that was based in Great Windmill Street. The British Book Trade Index lists the address as 16 Great Windmill Street and this seems to be confirmed by Notes and Queries: 'John McGowan, stereotype printer, and c., of 16. Great Windmill Street, is in the London Directories from 1825 to 1845'. On 16 June 1820, Godwin records a visit to Macgowan, Windmills St.

There are other entires linking Macgowan to the book trade, most notably 22 April 1820: 'Macgowan calls (give B. III):', an entry which comes just after writing the third book of Of Population. On the title page of Of Population it reads 'Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown', but maybe McGowan was the printer.
