Capell Lofft was the son of Capel Lofft (1751-1824) and his second wife Sarah. He was a distinguished scholar at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. He inherited his father's radicalism and literary aspirations and was a frequent traveller to the continent and eventually settled in America.
